The U.S. efforts to gather intelligence really began in earnest in World War II with the COI and then the OSS. The OSS later became the CIA and it and other agencies have continued to gather information to keep the U.S. secure. This paper discusses the intelligence gathering function of the U.S. There are six sources listed in the bibliography.
