This 9 page report discusses the strategies applied by Exxon Oil company’s research and engineering division. The way in which complex systems evolve -- in nature, in politics, in the human body, in corporations -- has become, to a great degree, a science unto itself. Such study allows scientists and researchers in numerous disciplines to formulate theories about how complex systems evolve. It doesn't matter whether the system is a flock of birds, a microchip or the stock market, so long as it constantly adapts to changes in its environment. Applying such thinking to an entity such as an oil company’s research group illustrates the ways in which new thinking is required for the new millennium. Bibliography lists 20 sources.
