Amy Tan’s “Joy Luck Club” and the Mother-Daughter Bond in All Cultures:

[ send me this term paper ]
This 12 page report discusses the quest for personal identity that is so deeply interwoven in the relationship between mothers and daughters. The reason the Amy Tan book and its subsequent movie were so successful was the fact that those relationships served as examples of how women, young and old, strive to place themselves beyond the control of strong mothers and become individuals. Countless stories throughout history document the evolution of the mother-daughter relationship. In the twentieth (twenty-first) century, the stories have often been set in the context of developments in psychoanalytical and feminist theory. Of equal value, the stories of mothers’ and daughters’ understanding of one another in the context of their unique culture is important. Whether or not that culture is one of first and second generation immigrants or the differences between women born into different generations of the same fundamentalist religion, the relationship of mother and daughter transcends and defines all other relationships. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
