Duval Plastics was founded in 1906, and by 1977 it had developed a two-arm career
ladder for its research scientists. Some sought management positions, but generally
because it was the accepted path of organizational acceptance and reward in the late
1970s. The paper recommends taking the focus off management as a reward as a solution
for keeping mid-career scientists in their laboratories, shifting instead to reward for the
