more than entertain people; they wanted to
influence how people thought, or how they perceived
the world. My premise is that Hawthorne
wanted to influence the conscious mind through
parable or fable. Poe was more of a mental
subterranean, and wanted to reach the unconscious
mind, through the doorway of fear. The writer
will examine Poe's stories, "The Tell-tale Heart"
and "The Oval Portrait," and Hawthorne's short
story, "Rappaccinni's Daughter", to determine if
they fit the proposed premise. Bibliography
