A 10 page research paper/essay that explores the perspective of four authors in four classic novels, Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe; Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift; Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and Hard Times by Charles Dickens. Each of these novels ends with certain assumptions concerning the author's orientation toward human nature. Furthermore, each novel shows that the author's orientation toward human nature reflects certain basic ideas and concerns of the era in which the novel was written. Examination of these novels, therefore, shows that while the precise orientation of society toward human nature changes over the course of time, mirroring societal concerns, the examination of what constitutes human nature--or what should constitute acceptable human behavior-- remains a topic of fascination for writers, no matter what the age or societal circumstance. Bibliography lists 10 sources.
