Lystra's "Searching the Heart: Women, Men, and Romantic Love in Nineteenth-Century America" draws its influence from a long-standing misinterpretation of Victorian love and relationships as being covert and void of romantic undertones. The chronological scope of the nineteenth century provides for a more focused major emphasis upon the social aspects inherent to the romantic love Lystra found to be significantly more evident than what has long been understood of this era.
