4 pages in length. Lystra's "Searching the Heart: Women, Men, and Romantic Love in Nineteenth-Century America" draws its influence from a long-standing misinterpretation of Victorian love and relationships as being covert and void of romantic undertones. The chronological scope of the nineteenth century provides for a more focused major emphasis upon the social aspects inherent to the romantic love Lystra found to be significantly more evident than what has long been understood of this era. Through the discovery of copious love letters, Lystra projects an overwhelming sense of devotion, affection and tenderness between couples who were not intimidated by social dictate to display their romantic love. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
