of the nineteenth century (1802-1880), Lydia Maria
Child wrote about and lived within controversy,
becoming a "household name" when still relatively
young. But that was almost two centuries ago,
and Child and her work has not surfaced until the
last decade. In this discussion we will look at
the work of Child and her contemporary, Catherine
Maria Sedgwicks, particularly how these nineteenth
century women wrote of race and gender issues.
