The advent of computer technology is, in and of itself, a positive move toward overall advancement, but the loss of individual privacy has come to represent a high price paid for such progress. As far as government infiltration is concerned, it has reached the point where bureaucratic functions have come to override individual rights insofar as these functions are presumed to serve the common good. Giving no consideration to the individual himself, whatever efforts necessary to obtain the desired information will be put forth; as long as this information is being used to help bring criminals to justice or thwart the crime to begin with, the answer is yes. In the meantime, there is no division between lawbreakers and the general public, as all are being lumped together in a mass of databases, with the rise of post-911 surveillance reflecting one of the most significant examples of this growing reality.
