A 5 page critique of Stephen Crane’s “Red Badge of Courage”. Suggests that Crane’s characterizations in the “Red Badge of Courage” offer some of the most criticized aspects of his work. Noting that Crane chooses in most cases to refer to his characters by description rather than by name, this paper points out that Crane’s use of descriptions such as “the youth”, “the tall soldier”, and “the loud soldier” rather than using first names is far from dehumanizing as some critiques would suggest. Emphasizes that in reality Crane’s use of broad yet specific descriptors alludes to the application of the lessons of the Red Badge of Courage to all the soldiers who fought. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
