This is a 3 page review of the video documentary “America and Lewis Hine”. Photographer, sociologist and humanist, Lewis Wickes Hine (1874-1940) is probably best known for his insightful and artistic portraits of immigrants at Ellis Island, the housing and labor conditions in the United States, the human loss during World War I, and the construction of the Empire State Building during the Great Depression. One of the best portrayals of the man and his work is offered in the 1984 color video documentary directed by Nina Rosenblum entitled “America and Lewis Hine” (56 minutes, narrated by Jason Robards, Maureen Stapleton and John Crowley). The video covers over 40 years of Hine’s professional life in relation to the historical and political events of the time and how as an artist he was able to capture the personal perspective of these events.
Bibliography lists 3 sources.
