A 4 page essay on Sebold's The Lovely Bones. In this novel, the narrative voice is provided by Susie, a fourteen-year-old girl, who immediately informs the reader that she is dead. However, being dead, Susie is omniscient and can provide the reader with insight into the thoughts and actions of her family and friends as they cope with her death and sort out its ramifications in their own relationships. This unique narrative device gives Sebold a platform for examining these relationships that is extremely detailed in regards to how death and grief can affect relationships, making them stronger or nearly destroying them.
