Socrates was a firm believer in the notion of knowledge and enlightenment, contending that those who seek anything less than an examined life are, in effect, living a wasted life. Whether he utilized literature, visual arts, the quest for happiness or a whole host of other examples for his argument, Socrates' assertion formed the basis upon which the philosopher composed the fundamental elements of his life theories, inasmuch as he believed with all his heart that mankind cannot possibly be happy without perpetually challenging himself and his surrounding environment.
