A 7 page overview of Stephen Crane's "The Open Boat". Written during the latter years of the 1800s this short story captures the actual experience of Crane whose boat capsizes and who is flung to the whims of the sea in a small and unstable dinghy with three other men. Through their fortitude and cooperation the men manage to survive a harrowing thirty hours at sea only to capsize once again within one half mile of Florida's shoreline. Three manage to swim to shore but one perishes. Provides a brief overview of Crane's own short life and discusses his view that nature is neither vicious nor plotting, only indifferent. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
