This is a 10 page paper discussing the fold theory and the female body in time and space and the arts. Over the course of history the concept of woman has varied from being something biological which is manipulated by man, to something that is not having space but being space. Within the concept of space and time, the idea of the fold introduced new theories which postulated that time and space were not continuous but actually folded over on themselves. The concept of the fold and looking back at oneself was taken into feminist theory as one perception of women’s bodies. An additional aspect of the flesh was added and reflected in women touching their own bodies as a way to reaffirm their existence. While the concept of the fold continued in space and time theory, theories of the body as experience and intelligence surfaced as well as the idea of the complexity of folds was seen in the arts. Folds and the distortion of bodies seemed more prevalent in regards to the depiction of women in art whose bodies were constantly folded and distorted by male artists. While this was not always the case, women subjects who did not fall within the norms of society seemed more apt to have folded images and distorted bodies in the paintings. While the concept of the fold in time and space is still a popular theory, the folding of women in images is not as common but the concept of the folding of women’s existence and the reaffirming and reinventing of the feminine concept is still prevalent.
