An 11 page paper discussing Harvard Case 9-795-113 in
terms of the industry's environment at the time and Porter's Five Forces. It is indeed greatly
tempting to commiserate with the old, established airlines for all they suffered during their years
of such great losses. However, that temptation lasts only as long as it takes to understand that it
was their own refusal to change their ways of doing business in a time when business was
changing so very rapidly that contributed to their decline. Only a few of the upstarts sanctioned
by deregulation were successful. Most appear to have attempted to be smaller versions of the
"gang," and they now are only distant memories. Bibliography lists 11 sources.
