This 6 page report
discusses the imagery and metaphor contained in Theodore
Roethke’s poem “My Papa’s Waltz.” In only takes four stanzas
Roethke presents the reader of his poem with a vivid and
startling scene. The rhythm of the language he uses mimics the
three-quarter time of a musical waltz and yet the rhythm is often
bumpy and interrupted. The image it presents is a small boy
clinging to his drunken father as the father waltzes him off to
bed. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
