Healthcare today faces numerous and complicated challenges that must be overcome in order to maintain the viability of healthcare organizations. To meet and overcome these difficulties, effective leadership in the contemporary healthcare system is essential. Therefore, examination of leadership theories and models in order to determine their effectiveness is highly salient to meeting the needs of nursing both now and in the immediate future. This examination will specifically examine three leadership theories, transformational, transactional and participative, before discussing the contribution of such theoretical models to nursing and drawing relevant conclusions and showing that nursing leadership should be a combination of all three approaches, with an emphasis on the participative leadership model.
