retailer's use of the world's largest commercial IT system. Wal-Mart's data warehouse
contained 43 terabytes of data in 1998 and the company was continuing to add to it.
Unlike other organizations that merely collect data without making full use of it, Wal-Mart
makes all of its data and IT systems work for the good of the bottom line by continually
monitoring and associating the items purchased on a single ticket. Wal-Mart uses the data
to cross market in its stores with great success. Less successful has been the company's
approach to e-commerce. The company will need to rectify the problems that continue to
