report discusses the short story writer known as “O. Henry” who
wrote using a pseudonym rather than his real name -- William
Sydney (originally spelled “Sidney”) Porter. He became “O.
Henry” after spending several years in prison and making the
determination to return to freedom as, literally, a new man.His
first nationally published short story, “The Miracle at Lava
Canyon” (1897) was written while he was still in prison. But
after his release, he moved to New York City, where over the next
ten years, he published over 300 stories and gained worldwide
acclaim as America’s favorite short story writer. Bibliography
