A 5 page examination of the changes we experienced in our view of the world and our place in that world between 1196 and 1795. The author utilizes five historic documents to illustrate the evolution of ideology which we experienced in this time period. These documents are Pope Innocent III’s 1196 pronouncement of man as a lowly being, a letter written in 1492 by Pico della Mirandola asserting our magnificence and superiority, Galileo Galilei’s 1615 letter attempting to justify his scientific finding to the Grand Duchess Christina, Martin Luther’s document detailing his own inner dilemma in trying to balance the justice of God and the construct of faith, and finally a 1795 mandate to King George III from Emperor Ch’ien Lung asserting China’s desire to remain relatively impervious to any further Western infiltration.
