A 5 page book review of C.K. Barrett's The New Testament Background: Selected Documents (1956). For the theology student, the study of New Testament scriptures also involves consideration of the wealth of collected wisdom and experience that is recorded in ancient literature, as these works describe the "history and thought of the world in which the Church was born" (Barrett xvii). Consequently, Barrett compiled such a text, which cites a variety of ancient documents that--collectively--offer a comprehensive picture for the modern student of the ancient world.
