In order to interpret Newman's distinction between liberal and mechanical education, one needs only to understand the significant difference that exists between philosophical enlightenment and practical cognizance as assessed by Newman himself. Newman was keen on asserting the fact that education is not an ends to a means, but rather its own ends.
