This 5 page report
discusses the concept of “manifest destiny” that is best
described or explained as the concept that it was the obligation
of the founders of the United States, the “new” Americans, to
expand their territory into as many regions of North America as
possible regardless of the indigenous people already inhabiting
the land or settlers originally from Mexico. Manifest destiny was
one of the major motivations for American western expansion and
one of the primary causes of the U.S.-Mexican War. Many, if not
most, Americans believed that they had a God-given right to the
land to the west of their already established borders. Later in
the century, the US expansionist desires arose because of a
powerful industrial economy that wanted control of new lands in
the Pacific and Caribbean. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
