A 6 page overview of the reasons behind the United States Civil War of the mid 1800s. Notes that the reasons behind this war did not relate solely to the issue of slavery and that there was an intricate understanding of these reasons even among the enlisted men. Notes the importance of the war with Mexico of 1846-1848 and the Secession Crisis of November 1860-April 1861 as well as the annexation of Texas, the Wilmot proviso, expansionism, the repeal of the Missouri Compromise and the Presidential election of 1860 as being factors important to the start of the war. Contends that the Emancipation Proclamation, although ineffective in actually releasing any slaves since the South wasn't likely to comply with the wishes of the President of Northern states, served to heat up the conflict and to concentrate the attentions on the issue of slavery. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
