This 8 page report
discusses the seven debates that took place between Senator
Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln during the 1858 Illinois
state election campaign as among the most meaningful and
definitive statements for that period of the political history of
the United States. Douglas, a member of Congress since 1843 and a
nationally prominent spokesman for the Democratic party, was
seeking reelection to a third term in the U.S. Senate, and
Lincoln was running for Douglas’s Senate seat as a Republican. It
was the content and the processes associated with the debates
that first brought Abraham Lincoln to the attention of the
general public. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
